I’m the type of person who will find one band that I love and will listen to them on repeat until I get so sick of them that I literally want to vomit at the sound of them. It’s like I’m one of those over-obsessed girlfriends who smothers their boyfriend at the beginning of a relationship and then gets so sick of the dude that we break-up (not that I do this in real life).
The good thing about my insanity is that if I listen to a band that much then I know that I must really, really like them, and that they are good (at least to me).
This summer and early fall that band was Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros. I always liked them, though I didn’t fall madly in love with them until I saw them perform at the Firefly Music Festival in June. They were so amazing. I could probably write 5,000 words on how it was such a spiritual experience for me and how that led me to listen to their entire catalogue daily for four months, but I’ll save that for another day.
I love them. I really do. But it’s almost Thanksgiving and we need to take a break. So I’ve been making an active effort to listen to new music and this is what has really caught my attention.
Spotify recommended I listen to this band a couple weeks ago and guys, it is great and sexual. Like punk rock should be; thank god someone is still trying to be edgy. The only way I can describe their music is that it’s the type of music I imagine would be playing in the scene of a movie where a couple is just starting to get to know each other.
Plus, 1975 was a great year – it was the year my papa graduated high school! His class slogan was, “Staying alive in ’75.”
Also, they do this weird thing on Twitter where they only write in all caps and don’t form real phrases. Example:
Most of the names of the songs on their album are not more then one or two words. Maybe they have a problem with syllables? How offbeat!
The Royal Concept
Okay guys, this is the band to watch seriously…they are going to be big. “Glee” is covering them this week!
I shouldn’t have said that because I know it will turn some people off, but whatever, they are great! First off, they are from Sweden – can someone tell me why all the great new music recently has been coming out of Sweden? Maybe it is that awesome health care they get.
The Royal Concept is like a re-birthed Phoenix before they got old. It’s happy, fun, free – basically I just wanna dance in the rain when I hear their hit single “On Our Way.”
I’m really loving all this indie rock/ R&B crossover music that is happening lately. It’s so sexy and fabulous. If you haven’t listened to their song “Sweater Weather” yet you are in for a ride. It’s exactly the type of song that would be happening during a Blair and Chuck encounter on Gossip Girl.
I missed them at Firefly this year because they were playing around 1 p.m. and I was dying of heat exhaustion, but let me tell you, all the hipster kids were raving about these people. And well if the hipsters say they are cool….
I’m completely obsessed with Sky Ferreria for many reasons outside of music, which I will get to in a sec, so I will try not to be biased. But, I actually took the time to listen to her debut album this week and guys. I. love. It. And you will love it too, if you are into the lo-fi indie girl pop/rock type of thing. Her music sounds like the love child of Liz Phair, Best Coast and Sleigh Bells, which happen to be three of my favorite bands.
The song “I blame myself” is extremely honest and relatable.
How could you know what it feels like to fight the hounds of hell?
You think you know me so well.
How could you know what it feels like to be outside yourself?
You probably will recognize Sky Ferreira; she is a very successful model and recently made headlines for getting arrested for possession of ecstasy with her boyfriend (who was arrested for possession of heroin). Also, her grandmother did Michael Jackson’s hair and she grew-up with him. Oh, and she hates rules and likes doing her own thing. She was signed with a major record label, but broke ties with them because she wanted her debut album to be true to her vision. How intriguing.
Basically she is a musical version of my favorite drug-addicted beauty writer Cat Marnell. If you don’t know her you need to education yourself. Start here.
I discovered this band while watching an episode of “Teen Mom 3.” Good Old War’s song was playing while one of the moms was crying about her drug-addicted baby daddy being a deadbeat. The song “Amazing Eyes” is about exactly what you think it is about and was completely inappropriate for the scene.
But whatever, I will forgive MTV because this band is great. Granted, they are not new, but whatever, they are new to me. In the soundtrack of my life “Amazing Eyes” would be playing when I fell in love. It’s that beautiful.
Good Old War is folksy and perfect. If you like The Lumineers and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, you’ll like these guys.
That’s all I got folks. I made a mix of their best songs on Spotify and you can listen to it below. I’ll be back when I am so done with these bands that I actually wanna listen to One Direction.
