The internet has been abuzz for the past month about Ben Affleck being cast as the newest actor to portray the Caped Crusader on the big screen in the upcoming Batman vs Superman. Unfortunately, most of this buzz has been negative. Now, I have been a devoted Batman enthusiast since I was a small child, literally longer than I can remember, and I truly believe that Ben Affleck will do a fine job playing Bruce Wayne and the Dark Knight.
First off, people need to stop complaining about Christian Bale not reprising his role. While we would all love to see him play Batman again, Bale just doesn’t want to do it. He was offered 50 million dollars for the role and he declined. Of course, that 50 million also includes the upcoming Justice League movie and any other times Batman appears in another hero’s movie. Bale didn’t want to be locked into this role for years and years to come.
Secondly, the character of Bruce Wayne/Batman isn’t a very complicated character to portray. I hope I didn’t just lose you, trust me I can back this up. The character is very difficult to write. So the biggest part of this is if the writers do the character the justice he deserves. Since Christopher Nolan, the mastermind behind the newest Batman trilogy, is an executive producer for this upcoming movie, I’m sure he’ll make sure that nobody ruins his baby.
Most importantly, this is a Superman sequel, not a Batman sequel. This means that Batman is going to be a supporting character, NOT the main focus. But the story is what’s going to make this movie amazing. It’s been announced that this movie is going to be loosely based on the Batman graphic novel “The Dark Knight Returns.” This graphic novel is absolutely fantastic and I highly recommend that anyone interested in Batman reads it. But I digress, at the end of the novel Superman is sent by the government to stop Batman from being a vigilante. Batman is prepared for this and when they fight . . . Batman beats the man of steel. And when the movie was announced at Comic-Con this year it was also announced that the iconic dialogue from the end will be included in the movie.
“I want you to remember, Clark. In all the years to come, in your most private moments, I want you to remember. . . my hand. . . at your throat. . . I want you to remember. . . the one man who beat you.”
The first time I read that dialogue it gave me chills.
People keep forgetting that this movie is a restart for the Batman and all of DC Comics characters. The Superman movie, Man of Steel, was the first movie leading up to a Justice League movie. The Justice League is DC Comics version of The Avengers. The Justice League’s core includes Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash and Martian Man Hunter. This Batman and Superman aren’t from the same “reality” as the Christian Bale Batman films.
I just ask that everyone keep an open mind to Ben Affleck playing Batman. People didn’t think Heath Ledger was going to be a good choice for the Joker and look what he did. Also, Bryan Cranston, star of AMC’s Breaking Bad, has been confirmed to be playing Lex Luthor, Superman’s arch nemesis in the movie.
